S 500 L

A powerful V8 engine make its debut in the S-Class. The S 500 produces 285 kW (388 hp) and a peak torque of 530 Nm. This guarantees the S 500 a vastly enhanced performance potential compared to its competitiors. How was this achieved? With the aid of sensors our engineers analysed the airflow in the intake and exhaust ducts of the cylinders and improved the shape of the ducts. The result was an optimised air supply, resulting in a considerable boost in performance combined with reduced emissions.

For improved power delivery, the V8 engine is now fitted with four valves per cylinder. Optimum efficiency and thus reduced consumption are attributable to adjustable camshafts and the use of lightweight materials such as magnesium.
