A quick glance at the figures is all it takes to ascertain the sheer power harnessed by the AMG 5.5-litre V8 KOMPRESSOR engine in the SL 55 AMG: with an output of 380 kW (517 hp), the powerplant propels the car from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds. And with a peak torque of 720 Nm, the driving pleasure is seemingly limitless. The secret behind this truly outstanding power delivery lies in a belt-driven supercharger which generates an extremely high boost pressure. When the engine speed exceeds 2400 rpm, some 1800 kg of air an hour are channelled into the combustion chambers.
